Tempus fugit

Posted in Friends & families by helenofmarlowe on January 28, 2011

This morning, I opened an email from a friend who said,

Do you remember where you had lunch twenty-five years ago today?

I thought — huh?  What kind of question is that?

Nonsense.

Then later today, as I heard (not for the first time this week) that twenty-five years

ago today was the day the space shuttle Challenger  exploded, I understood.

And I responded to her email — yes, yes, we were in a cafe near Wake Forest University,

there was a tv over the bar …

Twenty-five years.

Twenty five.

Years.

I remember where I was when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, within about one minute of take-off.

And I remember what followed–an endless replay of the disaster on the TV screen that must have been watched all over America, while the managers of the disaster were unable even to make a single goddamn comment. The silence went on for hours, while the managers who made the decision despite some warning from the engineers, while they sat stupified and unable to deal with the disaster they made by ignoring what they now knew to be a very relevant warning they had chosen to ignore.
